Warning: This post contains some hard truths. Don’t proceed unless you are ready to hear them!
Want tons of traffic? It’s actually not that hard. Just three steps, in fact.
1. Write posts that people want to read – every day.
First, who is your target audience? Then, who is your ideal reader? It’s not the same answer.
Your target audience is a list of demographics. 21-32 years old, female, fashionista, traveler. That’s a target market, and you need to know yours if you want to get traffic. Don’t say “everyone.” No successful brand caters to everyone.
Your ideal reader, on the other hand, is a specific person. They will fall into your target audience, and you’ll write every single post specifically to them. It can be a real person or a fictional person. Janelle. 24 years old. New wife and mom. Wants to work from home, but doesn’t know how. Needs inspiration/motivation – not really a self starter. Likes to feel accomplished at the end of the day. Hopes to make enough money to fuel her passion for travel.
Until you know your target audience and your ideal reader, how can you possibly write posts they want to read? (HINT: You can’t.)
Once you’ve worked it out, think about your ideal reader’s main problems in life. Write blog posts that can solve their problems, then edit slightly if necessary to be relevant to your broader target audience.
And then… here’s the key…
Write these posts every single day.
Or, at least regularly. That’s the number one way to bring in more traffic – write high-quality posts more often. I wrote an entire blog post about it here.
2. Stop waiting for people to find you.
Okay, now we are cooking. You’re writing interesting posts that people want to reader, so…
Stop waiting for people to find you!
You have to get your posts in front of eyeballs. The cheapest way to do this is to join Facebook groups that allow you to promote your posts and to learn the basics of SEO. The fastest way is to pay for social promotion on Facebook and Pinterest. I prefer a combination of both.
But my god, you can’t just sit around and wait for people to stumble upon your blog by some happy accident.
Yes, I am aware that getting your posts out in front of new readers takes a lot of time or money (or both). What, you thought this blogging thing was a cakewalk? Please. It is a business! You have to nurture it so it will grow.
Someday, when you have a million readers per month, you won’t have to work as hard. Regular readers will share your posts for you. But until then, roll up your sleeves or pull out your wallet.
3. Stop caring so much about pageviews and start measuring traffic in revenue.
Okay, last hard truth… you care waaaay too much about the wrong thing.
More traffic usually leads to more revenue, but not always. Quality is definitely better than quantity. Remember, you cannot pay your bills with pageviews.
Stop measuring the traffic that doesn’t matter – the once-and-done people who are never going to buy anything, click any ads, check out your affiliate recommendations, comment, share your posts, etc.
Bloggers always ask me, “How much traffic do I have to have before I monetize my blog?”
And my answer is… 1. You need 1 reader to potentially make money with your blog. That’s it. Monetize from the very first day you start blogging! You might not actually make money until you have more readers, but you want those processes in place so you can start testing what works and what doesn’t work.
Only work on increasing your traffic if it is sincerely the best way to make more money. Sometimes, focusing on other things can help you increase your income without increasing your traffic at all.
For example, do you monetize by working with sponsors? If yes… are you actually reaching out to contact sponsors? If you let them just come to you, you might get a few brands contacting you every year. I made over $10,000 working with brands in the last 6 months alone, but it was because I took the initiate to contact them. Yes, this took time. I focused on doing that instead of trying to drive more traffic, and as a result my traffic didn’t grow much, but my income did.
Here are some other things you might focus on doing instead of focusing on driving more traffic:
- Optimizing your ads
- Writing posts that promote affiliate products
- Creating your own informational products (ebooks, courses, etc.) to sell
- Connecting with more sponsors
- Booking freelance clients
That’s not to say that no one in the history of blogging should ever focus on driving traffic. More traffic can help you bring in more revenue in most cases! Just make sure that you have your ducks in a row first, so that the readers you’re bringing to your blog actually help you earn more money.
